Trezor.io/Start: Beginner's Checklist
Setting up your Trezor wallet for the first time? Follow this step-by-step checklist to make sure you complete your setup safely and correctly.
1. Get the Right Hardware
- Make sure your Trezor device (Model One or Model T) is new and sealed.
- If the holographic seal is broken or looks tampered with, do not use the device.
2. Use a Secure Computer
- Choose a computer that is free of malware and not publicly shared.
- Avoid installing or setting up Trezor on untrusted networks or machines.
3. Go Directly to the Setup Page
- Open your browser and manually type the official Trezor setup page:
trezor.io/start
- Do not click links from emails or advertisements to avoid phishing scams.
4. Download Trezor Suite
- Select your device model (Model One or Model T) on the start page.
- Download the Trezor Suite desktop app for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Install the application and launch it once done.
5. Connect Your Trezor Device
- Use the provided USB cable to connect the Trezor to your computer.
- Trezor Suite should automatically detect your device and prompt you to continue setup.
6. Install Firmware (if required)
- If the device is brand new, it will not have firmware installed.
- Trezor Suite will guide you through installing the latest official firmware.
- Follow all prompts and never disconnect the device during firmware installation.
7. Create a New Wallet
- Choose “Create new wallet” unless you are restoring from a previous backup.
- Let the device generate your wallet securely using its internal chip.
8. Back Up Your Recovery Seed
- Your Trezor device will display 12 or 24 recovery words.
- Write them down in order on the recovery sheet provided in the box.
- Never take a screenshot, photo, or digital copy.
- Store the recovery seed securely and privately. It is the only way to restore access to your funds if your device is lost or damaged.
9. Set Up a PIN Code
- Choose a secure PIN to protect your device from unauthorized access.
- Enter the PIN on the device screen (Model T) or use the randomized grid system (Model One).
- Memorize your PIN or store it securely—but separately from your recovery seed.
10. Explore Your Dashboard
- Once setup is complete, the Trezor Suite dashboard will show your portfolio overview.
- Add supported coins (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) to start managing them.
- Use the “Receive” tab to get addresses and the “Send” tab to move funds securely.
11. Understand the Security Basics
- Trezor will never ask for your recovery seed on a computer screen.
- Always verify receiving addresses on the Trezor device screen.
- Only confirm transactions on the physical device, not just your computer.
12. Bookmark the Right Pages
- After setup, bookmark the Trezor Suite app or web dashboard.
- Avoid using search engines to find Trezor links in the future to reduce phishing risks.
13. Stay Updated
- Check Trezor Suite regularly for updates.
- Keep your firmware and application version current to stay protected against new threats.
14. Practice Safe Storage
- Keep your recovery seed in a fireproof, waterproof location.
- Do not store it online or in cloud-based services.
- Consider using a metal backup plate for long-term durability.
15. Test the Backup (Optional but Recommended)
- Once familiar, use another device or a safe environment to test the recovery process.
- Restore your seed to a test wallet to confirm it works before storing significant funds.
